Young Farmers Make a big splash
Posted by romeethredge on February 14, 2014
We are proud of our Seminole County Young Farmers group that made a big splash at the state convention last week. Our own Greg Mims was named State Young Farmer President and we are all happy about that.
I’m not surprised that Greg Mims has risen to the top of the Young Farmers organization to be the State president this year. He is always willing to serve with groups to create ways to promote agriculture in our community and in the state. He feels very strongly about agriculture and wants to constantly improve and showcase the qualities of an agricultural community. He serves as district supervisor for the Flint River Soil and Water District. Greg also serves as chairman of the Georgia Soybean/Small Grain board. It’s great to have good representation like this from Seminole County at the state level.
He is a past winner of the Citizen of the Year Award, Georgia Young Peanut Farmer, and Outstanding Georgia Young Farmer Member. Here he is below with Matt Murphy of Lasseter Tractor.
Here’s Bailey Atkinson receiving the Weeks Scholarship.
Here’s a further write up by Wes Pace, Young Farmer advisor.
The Seminole County Young Farmer chapter had a crowd of 32 members and children who attended the GYFA Convention held in Augusta this past weekend. The chapter was represented by Calvin, Melissa, & Bailey Atkinson, Mike & Susie Casey, Josh & Jennifer Creel, Stan, Brandi, Carson, Jad, Ruby, & Preston Deal, Randy, Jill, Kaylin, & Blake Earnest, Willard & Betty Mims, Greg, Stephanie, Will & Katie Beth Mims, Loren & Missy Shattles, Emerson & Dianne Skipper, Bob, Mary, Wesley, & William Youmans, and Wes Pace.
The chapter enjoyed a great convention that included many highlights for Seminole County. The chapter won third place overall in the chapter display contest. Wesley Youmans was recognized as the Outstanding Member for the Seminole County YF chapter. Bailey Atkinson was recognized as a recipient of the Terrell Weeks Memorial Scholarship. Seminole County was recognized as the host for the 2014 GYFA Summer Tour which will be held on June 20-21. A video of planned tour sites for the county was shown to all convention attendees. In addition, Greg Mims became President of the Georgia Young Farmers Association and assumed his new duties on the last night of the convention. President Mims named Wes Pace the new Parliamentarian, and Mike Casey the new Chaplain to the GYFA officer board.
A special thanks goes to our FFA students who constructed wood projects that were donated to the GYFA silent auction, and all individuals who secured items for the auction and basket that was given away at the summer tour booth. The chapter would also like to thank everyone who helped with the booth during the convention.
