Georgia Listening Session for the Proposed Produce-Safety Rule

Posted by romeethredge on March 18, 2013

On behalf of Commissioner Gary W. Black and the Georgia Department of Agriculture, we’d like to invite Georgia’s County Extension Agents, Specialists and farmers that you may want to include to consider attending the official Georgia Listening Session for the Proposed Produce-Safety Rule on Wednesday, March 20, beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Georgia Department of Agriculture headquarters, Horizon Conference Room (201). Additional interactive broadcastings will be happening at the same time at the Macon Farmers Market and UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center. The Listening Session is open to the public. The event will provide time for questions and answers from anyone in attendance.

Georgia is one of four states selected to host a listening session with FDA, and this event will provide our state’s fruit and vegetable producers with valuable insight into the proposed rule changes and how it will impact Georgia. For this reason, we felt the event will also likely benefit many extension agents (and/or they may be able to help spread the word with producers in their counties whom they feel will benefit from attending). The registration website is open online at this link: http://events.r20.constantcontact.com/register/event?oeidk=a07e7341wxwdf7a6a36&llr=fxchscmab

Presenters for the session are:

Dr. Michael Doyle, Director for the Center for Food Safety in the Department of Food Science and Technology, University of Georgia

Mike Taylor, Deputy Commissioner for Foods and Veterinary Medicine, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Dr. James R. Gorny, Senior Advisor for Produce Safety, U.S. Food and Drug Administration

This is an opportunity to hear about the Proposed Rule under the Food Safety Modernization Act for Produce: Standards for the Growing, Harvesting, Packing, and Holding of Produce for Human Consumption.  The comment period on the proposed rules ends May 16.  The proposed standards can be found at https://www.federalregister.gov/articles/2013/01/16/2013-00123/standards-for-the-growing-harvesting-packing-and-holding-of-produce-for-human-consumption#h-154
