Corn Progressing

Posted by romeethredge on May 3, 2013

Corn is growing and progressing along. Here’s some corn that has a little herbicide drift on it, but it is really growing well and is at the V7 stage. We need to be closely looking at all corn that had corn growing in the same field last year to make sure we don’t have any disease pressure building. I have looked at several fields this week for Northern Corn Leaf Blight where we had it last year but it’s not showing up yet, thank goodness.  Here’s Brock Ward, Randolph County Agent , who came down to tour some of our agriculture in the Deep South.

I found a little common rust this week, but it’s a cool weather rust that is not a real problem for us at all. We will be on the lookout for the bad boy, Southern rust.

Common Rust is a cool weather rust that does not trouble us here. It's not something to be concerned about.

We are seeing some lesions in fields due to sidedress Nitrogen getting caught in the whorl and burning the leaves and when it unfurls you can see the damage.
