We lost a good friend of Agriculture yesterday when we lost Decatur county Ag agent and Extension Coordinator, Mitchell May. He was a person who was calm, cool and collected. He was a fairly quiet person sometimes. Mitchell had a special kind of fortitude or sticktuitiveness. I remember one time we were fishing in rough water out of Panama City and there were 8 or so of us there. They dropped out one by one due to seasickness or exhaustion(we caught a lot of fish). Late in the day it was just he and I left in the stern of the boat, fishing. He was still catching fish when, I must admit, I wanted to quit and go sit down, although I never admitted it to him. He said “Hey, we are out here and it’s a beautiful day and lets take advantage of the opportunity we have. ” He was like that about life I think. Enjoy where you are and what you have and who is around you.

He did a lot of good work including many Field Corn Hybrid tests and he worked with the statewide Official Variety Cotton Test. The Bainbridge location that is posted on UGA OVT Site is there in Brinson on Jud Greene’s farm and is a valuable resource for us in Southwest Georgia. Mitchell was very good with pond calls. He often came over to Seminole County to help me figure out a fish problem in a pond or to identify a weed in a pond or in the lake. I remember calling him from the bank of a pond, asking his advice about fish that were dyeing. He was also a good cattle man and he knew a lot about feeding cattle and growing forages for them. He helped us figure many feed rations so that we were feeding cattle correctly in order to get the most gain.

Mitchell will be missed for many reasons as he was a friend to many.

Visitation tonight 7-17-13 at his father’s home from 5-7. Address is 955 Attapulgus Highway, Quincy. Funeral is tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Quincy.
