Wheat Tillering Away

Posted by romeethredge on February 14, 2014

Tillering on wheat is very important. Folks that put out part of their sidedress fertilizer the last week of January or so have fields that are really increasing the tiller numbers.

I’m here with Bryan Baxley and Wilson Faircloth looking at some wheat that has really put on the tillers since I was in it a few weeks ago. We were also talking about wheat growth regulators and that they could go on after full tiller which will be in a couple of weeks on this field.

See in the bottom photo how this plant has about 6 tillers and that means 6 grain heads, later on. We want close to 100 tillers per square foot for optimum grain yields.
