First Cutting

Posted by romeethredge on June 7, 2014

Here’s local hay expert Buster Ausley. He does a good job with producing high quality hay production. Here we were yesterday looking at some of his first cutting of hybrid Bermuda hay for 2014. It looked good and yielded pretty well. We did see some winter kill in spots through the field. He said he will fertilize again now and use plenty of potassium which is one of the keys to maintaining good hay production. You take a lot of nutrients away with the hay.

Buster said when talking about last year’s rainy season that was a struggle for haymakers. ‘You’ve got to make hay while the sun shines” He said it’s really true that you have to carefully time everything to make good hay.

We have a great forages site at UGA with lots of good info. Here’s the link
